Weather in Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Nothing can really beat a vacation in the sunshine, next to rolling waves, with a light sea-breeze to cool your skin… The Riviera Maya in Mexico offers this great weather all year round! In fact, this part of Mexico has more sunshine days per year, on average, than many Caribbean islands! Warm daily temperatures bless this region and make it one of the most sought-after vacation destinations in the world for those looking to escape winter snows and summer rainfall in other parts of the world.

Sunny Weather in the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is a truly amazing vacation destination for a huge array of reasons, but for many the average of 240 sunshine days per year that really sell it! If you do your maths you’ll see that it’s practically impossible to get a fully rainy vacation, and very unlikely you’ll get even one or two rainy days. The days are long, too, at 11 hours in winter and 13 in summer… so you’ll see that the Riviera Maya is an ideal summer vacation location thanks to its great weather. In fact, the long days and sunny weather here are very good for combating seasonal affective disorder, too!

Weather in the Riviera Maya

Feeling hot, hot hot!

The heat in Riviera Maya is both temperate and consistent all year round with it generally staying between 66 and 91 Fahrenheit (19 and 33 Celsius). Temperatures very rarely drop below 57 Fahrenheit (14 Celsius) or pass 93 Fahrenheit (34 Celsius). The waters, too, are generally pleasant sitting at between 80 and 82 Fahrenheit (26 and 28 Celsius).

Rainy Weather

Of course, one of the most pressing concerns regarding the weather when on vacation is dealing with the rain. Never fear, in the Riviera Maya, the chance of rain throughout your entire vacation is very low with only 60 rainy days per year (on average). When it does rain in the Riviera Maya, however, you will find that it is much less off-putting than it can be in colder climes. Tropical storms typically blow over quickly and so won’t ruin your day entirely, and the showers will be warmer than you would expect in colder places. You’re more likely to have rain between June and November which is hurricane season in the Riviera Maya.

Cancun’s Public Transport

Cancun’s public transport is safe and a great option for those looking to get around Cancun. The buses and the taxis are safe to use anytime day and night, but always use your best judgement. Travelers should try to avoid traveling alone and should be alert of their surrounds and those looking to pick your pockets, just like in any country. If you have no other option and you must take public transport at night, then take down the registration number of the taxi and take a picture of the taxi driver, then send it to a friend or if you are taking the bus, then let your friend know your current location and where you are heading. It is best to be smart when traveling using Cancun’s public transport.

Cancun’s Public Transport: Taxis, Buses, and Colectivos

Taxis in Cancun are far from scarce. You won’t have to wait long without seeing a taxi, usually just a few minutes. The taxis in Cancun are not metered like they are in other cities in Mexico, so you should always negotiate the price before you get in the taxi. Also, the fares can be expensive in the hotel zone, so make sure that you know the price before you get in the taxi.

You can also ask a local what they normally pay for a taxi from work and back to the hotel zone, so you can get an ideal what the price may cost you. Another thing to remember about the taxis in Cancun is that the taxi can pick up other passengers on your fare, so if you don’t like this, then voice this concern to the driver. Taxis are the perhaps the most convenient form of public transport in Cancun but not the most economical.

Ride the Buses

Public transport by bus is a great alternative if you are wanting to get to and or from the Hotel Zone, because they are safe day and night. You can pay around $1 USD for each trip, which is affordable. The public buses come around often, they are comfortable to ride, many have air conditioning, and even Wi-Fi internet. The buses are more affordable than taxis and the way to get to the bars and clubs with ease from downtown and back to the Hotel Zone R1 and R2.

Longer Distances by Bus

For a first class busride, the ADO bus is the way to go. The ADO buses travel from Cancun and the Airport to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and back to Cancun. These buses shows a movie for free and have air conditioning. The tickets must be purchased the same day that you are traveling. On the other hand, Mayab buses makes several stop on the way to different locations such as Puerto Morelos. Although, this is a second class bus, it is an affordable way to travel in Cancun. The tickets can be bought 24 hours in advance.

The white vans that you see in Cancun are known as Colectivos. The white vans run from Cancun, then travels to Playa del Carmen. Although, these vans are not as comfortable as other travel means, they are affordable and perfect for those who are on a budget. Also, if you grab a white van to Puerto Juarez, then you can get on the ferry to get to Isla Mujeres.
